Zero surprise there…I’ll leave my feelings on Margevicius at that.
I saw a 90% tariff on goods out of Vietnam. The Wahoo Kick Bikes I had were from Vietnam. I’d bet a lot of their stuff comes from Vietnam, so unless they have warehouses stocked to the gills with their stuff, the price of Wahoo goods went up ~90%. It’s a tax on people that buy anything from that country and many many more.
The time to get a new bike may be passing. Yikes…
Hopefully forward thinking vendors have overstocked to help cushion the price spikes.
Weird story: a person ordered a new Toyota car, and then when they were called that it arrived, refused it because of tariffs. It’s already here. There were no tariffs above what were there last year. People are freaking out about tariffs. (The dealer also told me that Toyota hasn’t briefed them on tariffs yet and how Toyota will handle them as some models will be heavily affected by them, and others won’t have much of an impact at all) The Dow is set to open down around 1,200. Someone on the box joked about being ‘tired of winning’. It’s not a joke.
But no tariffs on goods from Russia, that has the GDP of Texas!
No, the tariff on goods from Vietnam is 46%. The admin is claiming that Vietnam has a 90% tairff on our goods, a claim for which I can find no substantiation.
But this move pretty much kills my company. we have spent years and millions of dollars establishing a new factory on Vietnam to avoid the China tariffs.
I don’t see a way out for us at this point…
I saw the poster he was waving around that showed 90% on Vietnam. (My dad, an army lifer, was dismayed at the move of manufacturing there. He swore he’d never buy anything from there. And I’m surprised how much is already coming from Vietnam)
And the Dow opened down 1,100+ points, so our retirement accounts take a hit too! So tired of winning… Buckle up: the administration doesn’t see driving the economy into a wall as being a bad thing. And I wanted to get a cargo bike. (Down 1,200 now)
Sorry… I closed my business years ago, and was so glad I did it before Covid! Submitting employees to having to go to client offices being exposed to it. Hell, the tsunami that hit Thailand hit us really hard, and that was because no one could get hard drives. There will be a lot of pain. I feel for the businesses who thought they hedged the tariffs and then find out they still have large exposure. Running a business was an educational experience for sure… Good luck!! Maybe he’ll waffle on them again and drop them. (An island full of penguins got slapped silly by tariffs. On what? Penguin poop? It all makes no sense… Farmers will lose HUGE too over all this, and they can’t afford to lose much more than they already have.
Enough politics/economics…
Down 1,300!
Down 1,400.
EDIT: I misread the quick glance at the poster board, Vietnam has a 90% tariff on US imports! And no tariffs on Russia, not that it matters as imports from there are blocked (I think).
Will the new tariff rates affect everything you buy on Ali Express or are some product categories excluded?
NONE of the numbers on that poster board are actual representations of tariffs imposed on US imports. ALL of those numbers are just the inverse of trade balance as a ratio. The math, with Vietnam as our example:
US exports to Vietnam: $13.1B
Vietnam exports to US: $136.6B
Ratio: 13.1/136.6: 10%
The inverse? You guessed it? the 90% the orange clown was parading around.
You can do the math yourself, the trade #s are available at ustr.com
The 10% minimum is likely there for when the inverse was lower than that #, so even when a surplus exists. For those of you who are MAGA, go ahead and ask an adult for help with math.
Retirement account? Why? That’s why they are removing age limits on kids working. Your grandkids can support you now!
Yes, the new tariffs will affect everything, but specifically in the case of buying things form AliExpress because they are also removing the “de minimus” exemption for goods that are shipped in under $800.
So that set of chainrings or your new one-piece carbon HD that would have been exempt form any tariffs due to being under $800 will now be subject to the new tariffs.
And to exemplify what those tariffs are, it is now 20% + 34% on Chinese goods plus whatever existing / pending tariffs may already be in place.
So for my company’s products, there is a 25% tariff set to be enacted on June 1. So I am looking at 79% tariffs for my goods…20+34+25%.
Sure hope none of you need an inexpensive thermometer if you kids get sick or a blood pressure monitor if you have hypertension.
Hey guys, just a reminder to keep your contributions cycling focused. Thanks!
Ok. Well, I guess kids can start buying their own bicycles to commute to work on
Here’s a bike related contribution:
Let’s say I want to buy an american made bike (Sage frame, HED wheels), I still need a full drivetrain imported from somewhere.
I’m also pretty sure that Sage and HED are also affected by tariffs for the tools and raw material they need.
Depending on the state, you can send them out to get a job and start contributing to the family. I started at 13 in a crazy Italian restaurant that had a French chef. Figure that one out…
And to keep it about cycling: I rode my bike there and back. Something like 15 miles one-way, and a huge long hill climb on the return after working 8+ hours. And my bike was stolen there too! (I hope the rb’s died of some horrific disease) And I really liked that bike too. The 'rents had to drive me there and back, and I heard about the stolen bike so many times…
How will this affect orders on Aliexpress?
Does it mean all prices will go up on the site or you have to pay an import tax before delivery or both?
Already answered: Yep, and yep, or at least after delivery. It might be where Ali charges the tariff, or it’s required at delivery, or somehow before it’s delivered. Many years ago I got something from the UK, and was told by the shipper that I had to pay the tariff/duty within a certain time frame after delivery. It wasn’t much, but one did not want to avoid paying it. (It was a card on the package that I sent a check for it) It might have been an outbound tariff from the UK possibly, it was a long time ago. But the whole logistics of who collects will be interesting. If it’s collected by the local shipper, it’s going to be fun for all.
I got a SL8 expert that retails for CAD7,799, and it’s on sale at Spz website for CAD6,799, for CAD4,999
The bike was there collecting dust for about 1 year.
And that’s the other part of this. How many sellers will pad their prices because they now can. This whole thing is a big ugly thing for sure…
It’s going to be interesting to see how it plays out, and what the carnage will be.
And all I wanted was a cargo bike…
Bike order placed last week. Representatives called today: 2. And I will be calling again tomorrow.
(Congress could override the tarrifs if they wanted to.)
Some points of clarification…Aliexpress has nothing to do with collecting the tariffs. It is immaterial to them. Tariffs are paid once goods reach the US by the importer. In the case of goods ordered from Aliexpress, that is you (the individual).
I can’t speak specifically as the details of how it would be handled by CBP, but I would assume that you would receive a notice, possibly from the freight forwarder, that there are taxes / tariffs due on the shipment that must be paid before they can be released.
You will never see the tariffs listed on Aliexpress because they are not involved with the tariffs and never see a penny of it.
That is why the removal of the “de minimus” exemption was halted a few weeks ago…they realized, after the fact, that they did not have the logistics capable of handling the massive influx of goods that were shipped in under the de minimus rule. It would appear that they now feel they have the capabilities to handle it. How they managed to do that in such a short period of time is beyond me.
Completely rational to load up on consumables? Tires, chains, brakes, food maybe.
Quick de minimus update…I am currently sitting in on a tariff webinar and they just provided the following details:
- Will start in early May
- all packages from China will be subject to tariffs
- tariffs will be 30% of package value or $25 / package
- In early June, it will be $50 / package or 30% of value
So if you want something from Aliexpress or from a Chinese manufacturer, order it now.
