From next month, I’m only doing VO2 max workouts indoors and all other workouts will be outside and RPE based. So there will be 12 workouts for the detection to use but will my narrowing down of the power based workouts cause an issue? Has anyone had any experience of this?
That’s pretty much me! Four to five hours is a short ride, I’ll often ride ten to twelve hours and my events will be 24hrs or more. I typically bailed on the ramp test at about 5% lower than I felt my FTP actually was and I’d end up bumping it up a week or two later.
Thanks @bobmac, this makes a lot of sense and would explain the differences in suggestion vs. actual.
I have not done a 20min FTP since about 12 months ago so I guess we won’t have a way to directly compare. I’ve trained more as a sprinter I guess so it would fall under the explanation your provided and the known difference in AI estimation vs. ramp test results for that phenotype.
I don’t have a ramp test phobia so I guess i’ll just continue with that over AI
Yours and Kentish’s issues will be difficult to overcome. While you have some/most of your riding without Power, AI-FTPD won’t be able to factor that in for detection.
The other result is so small it’s within margin of error.
There’s no issue with using the Ramp Test as long as you understand your phenotype implicit in your power curve and how the block of training you may have just completed could effect your FTP results. Even if you set your FTP too high as the result of your Ramp Test, you’ll probably learn where it may need adjusted as you take on the short anaerobic efforts (e.g. 150%+ FTP)
FWIW: My first AI FTP results back in mid-Feb were within 2W of my own estimated FTW, so I am going to have the system calculate AI FTP again.
That is, err, interesting. While it makes some sense within the (my perception, right or wrong) TR system of progressing workout level difficulty within plans (my perception, right or wrong), it simply reinforces the discussion upthread about calling it something other than FTP detection.
Has something changed in the system? I used AI FTP detection about a week and a half ago, it gave me a slight increase and provided plan adaptations. After that, at some point last week, I removed an event from my calendar and recalculated my plan, which gave me another ramp test to do. I skipped that test, and have been riding only outside rides (or riding on another platform) since then. I noticed today that my FTP reverted back to what it was prior to the AI FTP detection and I had adaptations back down to a lower level.
I haven’t tried to recalculate AI FTP again but will do so tomorrow. Just curious if I did something wrong or am just, as usual, confused.

Apologies in advance, read through a lot of posts and didn’t see an answer to this question. I’ve been achieving my workouts without much issue, but the most recent adaptations replaced my scheduled ramp test with Truchas. I tried to ignore the adaptations but it changed it anyways. Any thoughts are appreciated.

This happened to me today. Coming off Base 1 rest week with a ramp test to kick off Base 2. Ramp test was deleted in my last adaptations and replaced with Venado without a way to see a new FTP. Will check with support.
2 weeks (15 days) later, FTPD gave me 265 which seems to be bang on. I think the extra 2 weeks of training was enough to sort it out.
I think it just didn’t work well with the acute effect of the 2 week marked sick - obviously needs more data. But 5ish weeks seems to be enough. Unfortunately does mean I have lost 17 watts!
So probably worth being aware of…
So, just finished my 3 week block with my AIFTP. Completed all workouts (missed one due to time), and most SS and threshold felt much harder than before. Previously I’ve often felt these types of efforts too easy (I for one have never understood the fear of O/Us). But this time around the RPE has felt much more “on target”. This leads me to two conclusions:
- I have always felt I underperformed on the Ramp Test - this seems to support this
- AIFTD in combination with AT rocks!
The wo’s actually seems so much harder than before that I’m considering if I should downgrade from MV to LV. Next block will show what to do…
AI detection has dropped me from 304 to 296.
TSS has been trending down slightly. Indoor workouts have been tough and I’ve been experiencing a drift in terms of indoor power vs outdoor power RPE. Outside performance has actually been improving.
onwards and upwards!
My understanding is that TR already imports running and swimming workouts from Strava, it just doesn’t show any of that info (yet). If this is true, does that info have any impact on AI FTP Detection?
I did a quick search, but couldn’t see that this had been asked/answered anywhere else, sorry if this a repeat question.
- No, non-cycling work does not get factored in at this time AFAIK.
I had FTP detected 15 days ago (on Monday the 28th) and it says FTP detection not available because 14 days have not passed since. It looks like a bug to me.
I had this message because I checked last Tuesday, decided not to accept the 6W drop and then it was climbing back to my old value after just two workouts - and now it’s saying no, because I did a detection on Thursday, I can’t have another one before my event on 23rd.
The 14 day timeout as originally implemented appeared to be the typical pedantic software engineer version of 14 days - i.e. say you ramp at 7pm on Tuesday, and you expect to be able to update 14 days later for your scheduled workout, and you want to train at the updated FTP at 7pm. Well you can’t. Because 1,209,600 seconds have not elapsed since the end of your ramp.
Just a quick share; I got a new trainer a few weeks ago so support advised that it would be best to do a proper ramp test to set the correct levels moving forward. Yesterday I had a scheduled ramp test and it suggested an increase of 5W, I took the test anyway and got an increase of 8W so its already nailing it, might not test again
