Love this podcast, wanted to start a thread for it. Don’t have much to say on this week’s podcast but for the podcast as a whole it is refreshing to have a kind of unrefined/awkward host as opposed to your typical boisterous personality. Not to mention the top notch content.
“Dr Glenn McConell chats with Assistant Professor Kevin Murach who is a rising star from the University of Arkansas, USA. Kevin is an expert on muscle, muscle growth, adaptation to exercise training, “muscle memory”, the regulation of muscle growth and muscle memory and the effect of aging etc. Muscle memory definitely seems real (especially in slow muscle fibers). Looks like epigenetics involved more than changes to muscle fibers nuclei. But more work needs to be done, especially in humans. We had a really great chat. I enjoyed it a lot. A very smart chap. Frequent but not regular listener: I peruse the library and pick and choose what I want. I very much enjoy the more science based podcasts these days. This and Empirical are my two favorites. That Triathlon Show is good as well.
I’ve listened to a few, but found it hard to boil out useful takeaways. The show notes are good, they summarise what they talk about, but don’t actually summarise the conclusions/thoughts. I listen to these things while running or lifting weights. I get distracted and don’t absorb critical moments. Which means I really need to go back and listen again with a notebook.
Podcasters (inc Empirical and Ask A Cycling coach) could learn a lot from the Zoe podcast where Jonathan Wolf summarises the points with utmost brilliance in about a couple of minutes. You have to hear things multiple times for it to sink in. Summarising is the lowest hanging fruit to aid this.
