Grand Theft Auto...Zwift killer? In game cycling. Crazy

Vice City would be insanely cool. I am typing this while listening to the Miami Vice theme…

I use Zwift as some visual stimuli while I do my TR sessions. Honestly, if I get this set up right and it works in that regard, I may ditch Zwift all together

Serious, I’m really disappointed that nobody has pointed out that “it’s just a game”

TR should get on this. Would steal all of zwift’s customers within a year.

Hahhaha, just watching Lama’s stream from a few days again, can’t stop laughing. :joy::rofl::rofl:

The main thing that gobsmacks me is this:

1.) Zwift doesn’t have wind. Grand Theft Auto does.
2.) Zwift doesn’t vary rolling resistance due to surface. Grand Theft Auto does.
3.) Zwift doesn’t use pre-existing standards for steering control. Obviously, GTA does.

Additionally, as I’ve watched the GTA cycling experience evolve, it’s clear to me that there is a real interest for a more immersive cycling experience. Probably not among hard core zwift racers but definitely among the average work-a-day zwift cyclist.

So, look, I agree that as it is now GTA is no threat to zwift. But I’m a guy with a modicum of vision…and I gotta tell you, if zwift aren’t worried about this they should be. There’s a way better platform that just needs to be developed and barriers to development are low. This at a time when zwift are clearly devoting all their development efforts AWAY from work-a-day users and TOWARD hardware and hard core racing. (if the hard core bicycle racing segment carried the economic day USA cycling would be a powerhouse organization)

There is a real threat here. And if zwift aren’t paying attention then those equity investors that ponied up >$100MM better start cracking the Business Development whip. Trouble is, the HW/SW development die is probably already cast in terms of what zwift can do over the next 12 months.

Agree. I tried Zwift for 4 months (non-racing) and it was boring. Would rather do the trainer work and watch what I want. Saw the GPLama video of riding in GTA and that looked fun and interesting! And I’ve never been into video games.

Very much this.

What’s to stop a AAA company from Rockstar from using their next GTA game as a base platform to add sports stuff to it?

I’d be very very worried. You can’t beat that level of advertising and the kids would flock to it.

Yup.

Not holding my breath though.

Rockstar Games has been around forever. Even their 20 year old titles, like Max Payne, destroy Zwift when it comes to graphics. These are games that ran on Pentium 4 PCs.

IMO, Zwift set the graphics bar too low when they first came out. I get that the platform needed to run on weak smartphones, but how many people these days actually run Zwift on an iPhone 5s? The vision wasn’t there.

I’m wondering how much of zwift’s computing power is dedicated to dealing with the thousands of players at the same time. But yeah, I never understood from the beginning why they didn’t use an existing game engine to build on.

Woah.

That is a scary reminder of how time has flown.

This one is particular hilarious. As far as I know ELITE has their sterzo, with full electronics on board, ready for release for about a year now. They are literally just waiting for Zwift to finally implement it into their platform.
And then there is that one dude who programs this shit in his free time. Would be hilarious if ELITE said screw it, maybe the niche GTA player can use it, lets release it.

If anything this mod is a wake-up call for consumers to what could be possible.

I’m going to get this setup this weekend and give it a shot since I have a pretty high end PC. I’ll report back!

I heard this a lot in the recent days… It’s a 7 year old game lol… Most toasters should be able to run this thing by now

Deffo works on my mid-range PC from 6 years ago

Zwift doesn’t vary rolling resistance due to surface. Grand Theft Auto does.

Yes it does, take the road bike on the gravel section, then take a mountain bike … notice the difference, for confirmation, see todays update as see the powerup the uses this exact feature

Makes me wonder if I can finally use the steering buttons on my Tacx bike…
