It’s not quite 2 yet, but I resemble that remark… I’m lucky enough to be a fairly unproductive member of society these days - I’m retired.
I’ve transitioned into the masters cycling profession, so wasting time on the forums is basically just part of the job. The pay sucks, but I make my own hours and the benefits are outstanding.
Some of us are on quite different time zones. I’ve been off work for a long time when you Americans still have to pretend to be working. Also, the new AI is pushing me so hard that I can only be on the sofa trying to recover the rest of the day.
Definitely a distraction some days but I also finally have an employee so I end up spending more time at my desk doing estimates, ordering parts, etc than I do actually in the shop itself at this point.
I just pretend to be working while I bounce back and forth between my TR calendar to see if the AI has updated anything and the forum.
I should say, it helps when you own the place you work. I do have to go out and fly a drone once in a while in order to actually make enough money to buy bike stuff.
I work a desk job so I sneak in here between meetings and while I wait on things to finish loading. I also read on my phone during lunch and cooldown rides so it adds up fast.
It’s easy when you don’t care about work. I really only work so that I can pay for bikes and trips. So most days my focus is elsewhere (here and other forums).
Retired. I spend a minute or two on Facebook and Instagram to see what friends and family are up to, but don’t scroll any apps at all other than this one. I HATE TikTok, Reels, etc. I know people who spend way too much time watching dumb videos. I spend too much time here reading and making comments hoping to add something useful .
I train AI models for a living Always 2 screens in front of me and I have downtime every now and then when model are training or when I’m simulating results to test them.
I did a lot of that too. As a result, I’m retired now, but I can’t sleep past 5:30am.
Living in the US and working with Europe and Asia means lots of early mornings. The Europeans don’t know how good they have it! I really felt horrible for all the people in Asia taking meetings at 11pm.
I (like many here, I suspect) have intense ADD and spend all day in meetings that are peripherally important to what I do (and which I should be on for the odd decision/support/emergency). I frequently use these meetings to do the other important parts of my actual job since that’s time someone else can’t drop another meeting on my calendar. Or they do and I’m already double- or triple-booked anyway.
When things are relatively quiet, or there’s enough happening that it’s in that liminal space of having to pay more attention than usual but I can’t maintain full focus on, these forums are perfect. I can read posts, sift through things, and pay just enough attention to catch something relevant if it comes up and say “Sorry, multitasking, what was that?”
