Colonoscopy....lay low for a few days?

Thanks for the info. Im in my off season so, as much as I didn’t want to, I skipped todays Z2 ride and plan to take tomorrow off.

When discussing my upcoming colonoscopy, I mentioned how miserable the prep is.
My doctor told me some of the preps now are a smaller volume (16 oz) and are much more tolerable.
Maybe when the time comes ask your doctor if you can skip the 2 liter dose approach.

Plenvu is one prep that is 16 oz. You do need to immediately chase it with 16 oz of plain water, though.

EDIT: And it tastes similar to how Dave Barry described MoviPrep in the article above, “like a mixture of goat spit and urinal cleanser, with just a hint of lemon” but with a lot of salt.

Given the diet is “eat trash” for 7days, I discussed with my doc options to widen the menu. Also I need to fuel my workouts and jello or broth are tough to bring along on a ride.
They allowed honey, gels & GU bloks (nothing red / purple, no dairy and no oil)

Thanks @rgwis for the funny article above.

Had mine a couple of days ago. The prep was Ducolax/Miralax/Magnesium Citrate + 2L H₂O just like it was 5 years ago. A heads up if this is your prep, there was a recall on Magnesium Citrate over the summer and it still isn’t available that I could find (USA). So don’t waste your time searching if you can’t find it at the local pharmacy.

The Dr. said just drink a bunch more water instead so I upped the water to 4L. But I made the mistake of refrigerating the mixture to make it more palatable. Let me tell you, if you down 2L of icy cold water in a fairly short period of time it will lower your core temperature significantly. Not fun sitting of the pot shivering from being so cold. For the second round of 2L a few hours later I let it warm up some and it wasn’t nearly as bad.

I did a ride the morning before starting the prep and was quite weak from not eating much the previous couple of days which was to be expected. Took off the day of the procedure and following day (although I felt good enough to ride but wanted a little break). Road again today and felt good.

For adults, preps do not need to be nearly as bad as they used to be. However, each center has different protocols. If your doctor gives you something seemingly arduous, you can ask for other methods. Here is a fantastic prep that I’ve used both in clinical practice and as a patient: https://www.pennmedicine.org/-/media/documents%20and%20audio/patient%20guides%20and%20instructions/gastroenterology/colonoscopy_prep.ashx?la=en

I was able to fall asleep at approximately 11pm, woke up at 2:45am to finish, and fell back asleep no problem after that was done.

When I had my last colo, I didn’t train the day I started the prep because I didn’t have time before work. I also didn’t train in the same day after I’d had the procedure. The day after the procedure, I did a 28 mile trail run :man_shrugging:t3:

The day I was fasting, I thought it would have been stupid to deplete myself any more than necessary. The day of the procedure, I felt fine but I was 10 pounds lighter after the procedure than I was before I started my fast the previous day. The weight loss was 100% from water, so I skipped that day too and just made sure I was rehydrated and fueled again.

Sidebar: I know someone who died from colorectal cancer. It was ugly. Get a colonoscopy when you are supposed to.
