Carillon Outdoor text (RPE)

I was just checking out my Carillion outdoor ride for tomorrow. The text says an easy RPE8 followed by a hard RPE 8. Is this right? How can you have an easy and hard RPE at the same level?

Main Set:

  • 4x2 minutes at an easy RPE 8, with 30 seconds at a hard RPE 8 between each.
  • 1 minute easy.
  • 4x2 minutes at an easy RPE 8, with 30 seconds at a hard RPE 8 between each.
  • 5 minutes easy.
  • 4x2 minutes at an easy RPE 8, with 30 seconds at a hard RPE 8 between each.
  • 1 minute easy.
  • 4x2 minutes at an easy RPE 8, with 30 seconds at a hard RPE 8 between each.

If you look at the power-based Carillon workout, you’ll see it’s just slight surges every two minutes. So the valleys are your “easy” RPE 8 and the peaks are your “hard” RPE 8.

I did notice that. I didn’t realise that RPE could have two sub levels within a number. I would have thought it was hard to tell the difference between a perceived low 8 and a high 8. Hopefully I will have a power meter one day.
