The Assioma DUO power meters themselves are amazing, probably among the best on the market. But I think the non-replaceable battery is a ticking time bomb.

My experience with the Assioma DUO has been a mixed bag. I love the power meter itself, but the battery issues are frustrating for someone who only rides 10 to 12 hours a week (but consistently, week after week). My first set lasted 5 years before the batteries died, already below the advertised lifespan. I then spent $450 on a discounted replacement set (by Favero support), and now barely 2 years later the battery can’t even last 10 hours.

I was considering the new Assioma PRO RL for its enhanced cycling dynamics data, but now I’m leaning toward having control over the battery replacement. **How did it work out for you?**

N=1

I’ve had my duos since 2018… no discernable drop in battery life 🤷🏻‍♂️

Also own a set of mx pros that are a year old now - haven’t had to charge them since the fw update that increased the battery life to 160 hours 🤣

welcome to the forum, the “ticking time bomb” title seems a bit exaggerated.

What has customer service had to say?

I have only had positive experiences with Assioma battery life. I had my first set for 5 years with no battery issues before I switched to my second set, Pro MX-2, and the battery life is fantastic.

Go back and look at power pedals that had battery doors and check how those went… I am sure you will find that replaceable batteries have their own issues.

Like most on here, I have only anecdotal evidence to offer, for whatever that’s worth.

I have a set of Favero bePRO pedals (predecessor to Assioma) that now live on my trainer bike. I bought those in early 2017, and whilst I haven’t recorded the battery life, they’re still fine - I don’t charge them often at all so it must still be tens of hours. I also have Assiomas that I bought in January 2022, and the batteries in those still last ages.

So, whilst your experience doesn’t sound great, it’s definitely not the case that it’s the same for everyone.

What a dramatic title. Mine are still going strong after nearly 8 years, hardly call it a problematic or issue waiting to happen. I’d take the Assioma battery, even being non-replaceable over ALL my other power meters with replaceable/disposable batteries. They have caused way more issues, late ride starts, crapped out during ride while my Assiomas have never failed me once.

I replaced the previous gen Favero BePro S, bought in 2016 or 17, with a Black Friday set of Favero Assimoa Pro RS earlier this year. I never noticed any degrading of the BePro S, I just fancied the easier transfer and double sided.

Strange. I bought my duo’s on a black friday sale in 2018 and I haven’t noticed any drop in battery life - I’m sure they have degraded, but certainly not a lot where I’m charging frequently. I ride over 500 hours per year, so we are talking thousands of hours. Only thing I have had to do is bearing replacements - which is super easy.

Bought my Assioma in 2018. They saw alot more use back then when I only had one bike and trained outside most of the time. Looking at Strava I probably have ~15,000 miles on those pedals, so 800-1000 hours of use.

Now days I have 4 different bikes with power meters and the bike with the Assioma is one of my least ridden bikes, hard to say how much battery life they’re getting these days, but they definitely still work fine.

In truth I’ve never really paid much attention to the battery life on them. I have the charger right next to where the bike sits and charge them when the bike computer says the battery is low. I’ve probably had 3 rides in my life where I ended up with a dead PM battery.

I got mine in 2019 and batteries are still good. Def not as much use as others report as I ride mtb more than 50% of the time with spider PMs. Most recently I got a Quarq spider that uses a CR2032 and I like that idea over rechargeable as it eliminates any battery angst.

</div>

I think you are touching on a key point: **usage determines charging cycles, and charging cycles ultimately determine battery life.**

The reason I use dual sided power meters is specifically to monitor my left/right power balance; (otherwise, not needed indoor because the Kickr provides power). Because of that, I am not using the Assiomas only for occasional outdoor rides or specific workouts. I use them for **100% of my riding** , both indoors and outdoors, and I have been doing that since 2019. That means 2 to 3 workouts on some days, plus 1 or 2 longer outdoor rides per week.

With that usage pattern, I have consistently had to charge the pedals roughly every week. Even assuming approximately 50 full charging cycles per year, that should not translate into the battery becoming unusable after only a few years. A battery designed for this type of product should reasonably be expected to provide many years of service under normal cycling use (500 per Favero).

Personally, **I have never been able to get anywhere close to 40 or 50 hours of actual riding from a charge**. In my experience, I typically get only about 20 to 25 hours (while the pedals are still new), or roughly 2 weeks, before I need to recharge.

So my concern is not simply that I use the pedals a lot. I fully understand that high usage means more charging cycles. That is particularly frustrating because the power meter itself is extremely reliable and, in my opinion, one of the best on the market. The weak point is the battery, especially because it is not replaceable. Once the battery deteriorates, the entire pedal effectively becomes disposable despite the electronics and power measurement system still working perfectly.

_These are a set of dead power meters I just can’t bring myself to throw away. The crazy thing is, those power sensors are definitely still useful, but I can’t use them because of a non-replaceable cheap battery._

Yeah potted batteries suck when they do start failing, but on the flip side they have some good benefits for durability, especially in the nasty conditions power meters see. I assume Garmin has the battery door issues sorted these days, but back in the day the Favero were the go-to’s because they were cheaper and didn’t have problems with water intrusion.

For a heavy user like you though, the cost of batteries on Garmin is going to be a non-trivial cost over the life of the pedals. You’re looking at like $30-70/year in batteries in addition to the more expensive cost of the pedals.

They’re not designed to be customer replaceable but it might be fun to take them apart and see if it is possible …

We’re talking about a device that’s been around 9 years.

There’s definitely no wide-spread noise about the batteries either dying prematurely or not lasting the stated number of hours when new.

That’s not to say that there are not isolated cases where the battery breaks, or something else goes wrong on the pedals that makes the battery drain - and having the battery sealed in place certainly makes life difficult in those cases

But on Ballance, after 9 years of thousands of people using the pedals, I’d say that the design choice to pot the battery in place has proven to be the correct one.

Doesn’t stop the OP being entitled to feeling frustrated in their situation… but I think more people would have more problems with a replaceable battery.

Nah the Faveros electronics are fully potted in resin - there is no fixing anything that goes wrong to be fair.

But the likelihood of them going wrong in the first place is far reduced.

The pro versions now get 160 hours per chsrge +/- 5 hours or so. Even at 12 hours consistently per week, you are looking at 4 charges per year. Given the battery types are meant to last 500 full chsrge cycles. That should be many years use before a reduction in capacity or increased likelyhood of failure.

I’ve had mine since 2019, put about 35,000 miles on them, and I’m only just now starting to notice a drop in battery life. I also have some play in the right pedal and am trying to decide whether to try replacing the pedal bodies or just get a new pair.

exactly, with a long battery life, you don’t (or shouldn’t!!) see enough charge cycles to notice anything for years.
(same with garmin watches.. charging once every 1-2 weeks, and after 5 years, you will only have 100 charge cycles.. big benefit).
Fwiw, I got my duo’s second hand, charge them a few times a year, in most cases way ahead of empty (same with di2), never noticed any degrade. (probably helps I have seperate indoor bike and a MTB, so I don’t make all my hours on the bike with the duo’s)

Exactly… typical sci-fi nonsense forum talk: charging an Assioma DUO power meter a few times a year or a Garmin watch like FR955 every 1 to 2 weeks (forget the newer models w/ AMOLED) that probably means you’re simply not working out enough. 😂

I get it, you optimize for battery life, I focus on fitness, but in the end, your anecdote doesn’t prove long-term battery durability. It proves you don’t use yours very much. Most years, I actually put more miles on my bike than I do on my truck! 😂
