I’ve found over the years that 200 watts on brand A trainer does not equal 200 watts on brand B. Obviously the measurement of a watt is standardized, the trainer industry and power meter companies need to come up with a standardized test to measure output of the trainers and pm’s so that a watt equals a watt across the board.
I bought a Zwift cog and a clicks to try them out. Between me and my wife we have three bikes, one which is a 12 speed, an 11 speed, and a 10 speed..
They’re thinking was that we could use the cog for all three bikes, but after one ride, the feel was so horrible that I decided to return it.
Anecdotal but here’s what I’ve found, riding a Kickr Core that I bought back in 2021. Trainer feel to me was entirely determined by gearing, I have a frankenbike as my dedicated trainer bike and after playing around A LOT with different gearing, settled on a 42t 1x crank and 17t single speed cog. The cog is “Bibike” brand on amazon, cheap but sturdy and very quiet compared to the Zwift cog.
And I have mounted my XC and gravel bikes (both with power meters equipped) and compared power output over 60+ minute rides, and the Kickr Core read within 1% of both power meters, so it’s accurate enough.
Anyone with the Zwift cog that doesn’t care for how it feels, if you have a cassette laying around, pull the Zwift cog apart and try different gearing. It’s a standard HG hub, you can just take the installed gear off and replace it with whatever. That’s how I found the gearing I liked, but then replaced it anyway because it was too noisy.
Haha yes, I cannot remember a time when I have not been doing factory spindowns lately. What actually seems to have fixed it, before today’s perfectly fine ride, was going back to the original freehub (contra all the advice on Reddit) and actually cracking open the Cog to make adjustments to accommodate it. This seems crazy to have to do to a Cog sold as compatible with this trainer, but there it is.
Huh! I think our setup has been resolved, but I will keep this idea in my back pocket, if only to mitigate the noise issue.
