2025 XC Bike & Equipment Thread

That’s cool - sounds like an awesome season!

I just realized (and I knew this deep down inside) that FA only works with a SRAM quarq PM. I have RaceFace SL crank and Favero MX-2 power pedals.

So unless I go with the Fox offering… I don’t think its worth changing out those parts. The MX-2’s are awesome, and I move them from CX, Gravel, MTB and Fat bike all the time.

I am sure that SRAM doesnt care, but it stops me from considering it.

Or you can switch to a sram crank with the pedal sensor (or cheap 1 sided PM) and keep using your pedals. But yeah, not the ideal path if you don’t already run Quarg/SRAM. But from that list, FA gets my vote by a huge margin. The degree of performance/speed improvement can be debated, but the biggest benefit for me is that it just makes racing and riding the bike a lot more fun.

Do you have one set, or multiple?

I only have (1) set of MX-2 that I just move from bike to bike. It only takes a few minutes to do it and they feel exactly like my old XTR in terms of retention and clip in/out action.

They also read within +/- 1% of my kicker depending on the type of ride so I am able to just throw a bike on the trainer and not worry if the power numbers are similar. The same goes for my road Favero Duo’s which go between a road bike and sometimes the gravel bike depending on the event.

A second pair could be a handy option 5 here.
If only because you have a backup should anything go wrong with the existing set.

(Granted, this philosophy has led to me having two drop bar bikes and two flat bar bikes, all with power meters and two wheelsets each. But I never have to worry about getting ready for a ride and realizing that a mechanical will keep me from riding!)

YMMV…

Unless you are unhappy with some aspect of the bike (sounds like your not), I’d pocket the cash (your option #3), and keep it for something that you feel is a compelling reason to spend the money. Eg add it to a new bike fund that you’ll use at some point in the future.

The BT Epic is such a great race. You from MO? I used to live there and returned for a couple weeks last year and raced it again while I was back from CO.

Coming from Garmin 1040s my best bike related purchase has been the Karoo 3. arguably not an upgrade to your bike but to your ride - for me it was at least

Great to see another north van xc rider, there are dozens of us (well maybe a dozen). It’s been quite a journey for me finding a build for my blur that is fun to ride on the shore/Squamish, while still a capable racer. I’m a heavier guy at 180-190lbs, so that adds another dimension!

How do you find the SC on the shore? I agonized over a SC vs regular 34, ended up with a 130mm gripx 34 which has been excellent, but I’m still torn at the weight cost. My build is about the same weight; I think anything lighter is going to be a serious compromise for capabilities in our part of the world.

big guy here ~200lbs, and I ride in santa cruz daily on my epic, which from my understanding is sort of similar to the north shore. I have really, really, enjoyed the new FOX 36SL GripX 130mm fork for this area of riding.
The 36mm stanchions are a welcome addition to my size and riding conditions, along with the new compliant air spring has been honestly incredible for suppleness and feel.

Maybe take a look at this fork versus a standard 34?

I am not from MO - but I have a lot of friends/teammates that have been telling me for years how great of a race it is!

Are you from MO or just located there for some time for work etc?

It’s a great race, it’s tough though. Very old singletrack originally built for hiking. Lots of loose chunky rock, roots, etc… The whole weekend vibe is great as well. Used to live in MO and did the race 5-6 times. In Colorado now but get back to MO to visit family once or twice a year

Is a well kept and specd SB100 a viable bike these days?

It will work great. People overstate how much courses have changed.

I set my base model epic 8 evo up with flight attendant. use Pike ultimate FA fork and 130mm air shaft kit. Pike can be set up 120, 130, but ships as 140 travel when buying new fork. Build came in at 27.5 lbs. XO transmission with power meter, zipp hi-top wheels, fast track control tires, 170 axs dropper, carbon bars.

Gunna need pics and first ride review! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

is this the epic 8 flight attendant build thread?

any other XC bikes people are lusting over lately? I have my eye on the 2025 salsa spearfish - steeper STA, 3 bottle cages on medium and up, split pivot suspension design and no proprietary parts has me excited.

currently on an over stroked '22 epic evo (130 front, 124 rear). I just never can get the rear suspension in a happy place. Flex stays seems to be my biggest gripe…

I really would love to see a new SC Blur with internal frame storage and a lightweight frame, maybe SC and Cervelo guys should get together on the same room…
