Today we’ve released TrainerRoad 2.6. We’ve also released a few website features lately that have been unannounced. Here’s an overview:
- In App Filtering: Filter workouts by plan, team, duration, intensity, etc.
- In App Sorting: Sort workouts by name, duration, intensity and TSS
- In App Workout Highlighting: Easily see how many times you’ve done a workout and where you are in a plan
- Team Forums: Each team has their own forum
- Ride Comment System: Ride pages on the website now have a new comment system
- Profile Pictures: Upload a picture to be used in your comments/posts
TrainerRoad 2.6 – Filtering, Sorting, Highlighting
We’ve seriously beefed up the filtering/sorting feature in the app with a new feature we call the “drawer”.
Filter Drawer
The app has a new section that lets you filter your workouts. You can choose any combination of filters and the workout list will automatically update with the appropriate workouts.
For example, if I clicked on “custom workouts” on the right then only my custom workouts would show up.
You can expand any of the filters and choose your own custom combination
This is a long requested feature. Plans are now synced down to the client and you can filter the workout list to just that plan.
There’s no calendar (yet) but this list view is very very useful.
The workouts are sorted in the order as they are in the plan with the week and day description on the workout.
Workouts you’ve completed are highlighted (more on that below). In the accompanying picture you can see that Emerson is the next workout for me to do which is supposed to be my week 3 Saturday workout.
Team Filtering
Any TrainerRoad team you’re on is now synced to the app.
This opens up some cool coaching scenarios. Coaches can create a team and add their own custom workouts. They just need to add their clients to their team.
This makes it really easy to view your coaches workout library and find the workout they’ve assigned to you.
You can also make teams for events. I’ve created a team for the 2014 Vineman 70.3 triathlon and added some of my favorite 70.3 prep workouts.
Highlighting and Advanced Filtering
The new app will highlight any rides you’ve done based on the “Highlight rides after” field on the bottom of the drawer.
If you’re in any filter view except a plan, it will give you a count of the amount of rides you’ve done.
In the accompanying picture, you can see that I’ve done Fletcher six times and Hawk Mountain one time since January 1st, 2009.
If you’re in a plan, we will highlight the workout’s you’ve done in a plan. The best way to use this is to set the highlight date to when you started the plan, then just roll through the workouts until everything is green.
You can also filter multiple categories at once. In the picture you can see that I am looking for tempo workouts between 90 minutes and 2 hours.
You can also sort by duration, intensity, TSS and workout name.
Team Forums
We’ve added a team forum feature to our teams. This lets you have public/private threads (based on overall team privacy) to have discussion with your teammates. This is a pretty straight forward feature that has a lot of potential. It’s a great way to ask questions and get more interaction with your TrainerRoad teammates.
If you click “Follow Thread” you’ll get e-mail updates when someone responds to a thread.
New Ride Comment System
Our previous ride comment system was from a third party called Discus. That worked OK, but you wouldn’t get notifications when someone commented on your ride! That was something we had to improve on.
We’ve re-written our own comment system that’s linked to your TrainerRoad account. You’ll get notifications if someone comments on your ride or replies to your post. You can also like people’s posts.
Here’s a recent thread from one of my rides.
You can now set your own profile picture to be used in your forum/ride posts. You can set this by going to your profile page on the website.
It’s dead simple and adds a lot of spice to your account.
Update on iOS
We’ve begun work on iOS (iPhone/iPad) and we’re actually pretty far through it! Our data is now syncing with the website, our design is on rev 4 and we’re working on pairing device right now.
We don’t have a timeline to share, but all of our focus is on this app. It should be really really cool when it’s out .
Happy Training!

Nate,
With regards to the iOS app, how do you plan integration between ANT+ devices and/or BT Smart? I’m assuming that an ANT+ key will be one, but my big question is whether I can use my Wahoo RFLKT+ to link both my ANT+ items and my BT Smart into the program. I’m super pumped to get this thing going!
You should be able to use your RFLKT as a bridge. I’m not sure if we’ll launch with that but we’re using the Wahoo Fitness SDK and that’s built in so I don’t see why we wouldn’t. It’s too early to promise it though.
You will for sure be able to use an ANT+ key on your phone to pick up ANT+ devices. We’ll also support native BT devices.
No code required, RFLKT+ simulates a Wahoo Key. Easy stuff 🙂
Any update on this? Now that the app is rolled out. Can anyone confirm weather RFLKT+ can be used as an Ant+ bridge to the TR iOS app?
Thank you!
Kudos, TR Team! Each update has been a significant improvement in form and function.
Keep it up.. thanks for all you do. 🙂
Installed the new version last night. When prompted I chose to do the “replace” install option. I then started my workout. I have a computrainer attached and have been using the old version 25 rides so far.
It felt like the computrainer was not giving the same resistance for the given power load as it had prior to the upgrade. I “calibrated” the computrainer several times but it still seemed much to easy. Especially when the power load was under 120 watts. Did you guys change the interface with the computrainer? Do I need to do anything else or am I just imagining this??
Need beta testers for iphone app?
Agreed on beta tester question. I have been anxiously awaiting an iOS version so I can utilize trainerroad for my bike training. I would love to help however I can.
Love the update!! So cool to be able to filter workouts from the app instead of having to search on the web first. The update installed flawlessly. The resistance control with my powerbeam pro works just like before the update. Nice work!!
I would really like a feature to highlight/dehighlight rides in client. I do long recovery rides outdoors and intervals on a trainer and that would help me out to keep everything on track in one app.
Please get the iOS (iPad) apps asap out there! This will increase your sales by far.
I have to say, with all that your app is handling, the stability of it is really exceptional. I’m really impressed, guys. I’ve only been using it for a week, but have used it daily since getting it. Really well done. The only thing I’d love to see – and I know you’ve already commented that you don’t intend to implement it – is more customization of the workout stats. I’m not using an HR monitor, so I’d love to see speed and distance. I’d also love to see distance at the end of the work – only way I think I can get this is by uploading the .tcx file to another site (e.g. Garmin Connect, Strava, etc). That’s a crucial stat for my training logs (at least to me). Otherwise, your app rocks – can’t wait to see what you do on iOS.
Very anxiously awaiting iOS! Would love to partake in beta testing should the need arrive, even if its buggy!
Not a member yet but as soon as you release the version for the iPad, i’ll be there!! Will their be an auto share feature with training peaks?
When is iOS version coming? I’m ready to join but need the iOS version, don’t want to buy a new computer.
Why do you need a new computer? My 5 year old mac laptop works very nicely with TR, as does my old Windows PC (significantly older than the Mac) – just get an ANT+ stick, plug in and go 😀
Running BT 4, my old Macs don’t support it. I have Kinetic InRide that I want TR for.
I must be blind, but I can’t seem to locate the Sweet Spot plans in the Workout Filters? Is there a way to force a sync with the server?
Thanks.
About the iPad app: do you think it can be used with iPad mini also? I understand that the app will run on iPad mini, but will the smaller screen size be usable for trainerroad?
