We are excited to announce our newest feature – Group Workouts!
What are Group Workouts?
TrainerRoad’s new Group Workouts feature helps you and your friends reach your goals while getting faster together. Eleven athletes can train together. You and ten of your friends can do the same workout while sharing voice, video, and data to have a built-in support system and extra motivation to nail your workouts.
How Does it work?
Using Group Workouts is easy!
First, make sure you have the newest version of the TrainerRoad App on your Mac or Windows computer. Group Workouts are only available on macOS or Windows.
To Create a New Group Workout
Step 1: Click on the Workouts tab and choose your desired workout.

Step 2: Select “Group” at the top of the workout popup window

Option 1: To immediately schedule a group workout, choose “Create Group Workout”

Share the code, then click on the Continue to Workout button.

Option 2: To Schedule the Workout for Later, Click “Schedule” then Select Date and Time and click “Add To Calendar”.

During the Workout: Enable your microphone and camera.

If you share a workout code with your friends, they can join you from the Group Workouts tab by entering the code. The workout will begin when the host presses the start button. During the workout, everyone will be able to share voice and video to chat and encourage each other while doing the same workout. The host of the workout can pause and resume at any point, while each person can adjust their individual intensity (based on FTP).
To Join An Existing Group Workout
Click on the Group Workouts tab and enter the workout code.

FAQ
Can I do a different workout than my friends?
No, but this is a feature we plan to add down the road.
Can I join a group workout just to observe or cheer a friend on?
If they have a TrainerRoad account, they are welcome to join just to spectate. If they do join, they will still be doing a workout, so if they aren’t riding, it will show that they did a workout with no power data. They can delete this workout in their career at any point after the workout.
How many people can I train with?
11 athletes can train together. That’s you and 10 of your friends.
Can non-TrainerRoad subscribers join a group workout?
No.
How do I invite somebody to my workout?
Share the group workout code with them. The workout code is displayed in the upper right corner of the workout screen. Or, schedule a workout and send your friends the RSVP link.
How can I find someone to workout with?
The TrainerRoad Forum is a great place to find Group Workouts. Check out the thread Group Workout Room Sharing.
How do I join a Group Workout?
Click on the Group Workouts tab in the app, then enter the code that was shared with you and click Join. Or, RSVP to a scheduled group workout and it will be automatically added to your calendar.
I can’t see or hear the other people in the group workout. What do I do?
Enable your camera and your microphone in the upper left corner, and make sure your input is set to your computer’s microphone and your output is set to your headphones.
My microphone has a lot of wind noise from my fan. How do I quiet it down?
Make sure the microphone input is selected to the built-in microphone of your laptop or computer and that the fan is pointing at you instead of the computer.

Can I do a ramp test?
Yes, check out Introducing the Group Ramp Test for more information.
Is there a minimum age requirement?
Athletes must be at least 13 years old to join Group Workouts.
What if I train on a Mac and my friend’s on Windows?
No problem! Group Workouts is a cross-platform experience for Mac and Windows.
Will this work on mobile apps?
No. As of now, this is just a Mac and Windows app feature.

Hi guys,
I’m a TrainerRoad customer and use a Computrainer (via TrainerRoad legacy app). Are you planning to roll out this new (and VERY cool) functionality to the legacy TR app? If so, are you able to provide estimated timeframes etc please? Thanks again. Love your work!!
When do you plan to support iOS for use on iPad?
Gee Mac: No, we won’t have it on the legacy app, I’m sorry.
EDventure: You’ll see a new mobile app out first, then we’ll work on Group Workouts on it.
Can we add a group workout and invite friends on the in-app calendar with a specific time?
At the moment, it is not possible to schedule a Group Workout in advance. To form a group workout, the host generates a code that he or she can share with up to 4 friends. These riders can then join the Workout using that unique code.
What happens if someone or the host stops and pauses the workout?
If the host pauses the workout, it pauses the workout for everyone. If anyone else needs to stop for a moment, the workout will continue on “without them” and they can jump back in when they return.
Can you listen to both your own Spotify and Group Audio so I can hear Dillon, Bhagavan and my song Here Kitty Kitty?
Sure, count me in !
I am using IOS device for training, can i use them as usual for this group ride?
Or i need to log in through computer ?
Thanks
Only MacOS and Window at this time.
Hi
Can you join an open group? If I am planning to do a workout, can I join a group of other people doing the same workout (even if I don’t know them – like an open group ride)?
Hi Simon! You can join if you have the Group Workout code. You check out this thread on our forum to find other Group Workouts.
This is awesome! Great job!
Is there a plan or timeframe when this is available on iPad?
We have no timeframe for iOS support at the moment.
We have no timeframe for iOS support at the moment.
Will this work with custom workouts that are created by a coach? Ie if my coach creates a workout for several of her athletes to do together. Or does it only work with “stock” workouts?
Custom workouts are not supported currently, however, we plan to develop support for custom workouts down the line as a follow-on feature 🙂
Bryce – hopefully that will be soon, as literally ALL my TrainerRoad workouts are custom built by my coach. ?
Super cool feature! This is pushing the envelope. I’ve read about it at DC and saw your shared workout. It’s interesting how you come and immediately there’s requests for more. Your SW dev team probably has a huge backlog of stuff (one-to-many, port to iOS etc etc..) Good luck with that!
Are there group workouts rooms where people who speaks the same language
The workout rooms are set up manually by sending your riding mates a code; we do not have any way to link you up with other TR users at the moment, but we hope to expand this capability in the future.
How does the FTP settings work? If we are doing the same workout, will out individual FTP setting be applied?
Yes, the workout is still based on your individual FTP.
Each rider will be riding at their respective FTPs, and can adjust the intensity of their workout independently from the rest of the group members 🙂
I really like this group workout option, but miss the instructions for each ride as I’m very new to training. Will these be added in the future, if so do you know when?
I’d also be interested in still seeing the workout instructions/commentary during group workouts.
Same! The ride instructions are awesome. Is there any way to download them so I can have them on a different device during a group workout?
It is possible to view them line by line using the Workout Creator, but it is a long and somewhat clunky process 🙁
You’ll need to load the workout into the Workout Creator from a computer, and then click the small black icons to view the line of text. You can get some insight into how this works by checking out this tutorial video: https://youtu.be/JZSksK9wfgw
But at the moment, it is not possible to mass export the workout text.
Is there any news regarding adding group workouts to iOS anytime soon? I think this would be huge game changer for a lot of people using the app 🙂
It’s definitely something we’re working on! There are just some other higher-priority releases and fixes we want to nail down first, but it’s absolutely on our roadmap! 🙂
I have a desktop PC attached to a 50″ TV in my workout room. Any suggestions for a good camera unit to use for group workouts?
I suppose I could use my laptop, but the screen is so much smaller and I’d need to find a way to put it on a stand.
Using your computer camera is probably the least complex solution, maybe its best to keep it simple! Its hard to recommend a webcam based upon whats compatible with your computer, though. Apologies.
I know my friends and family would use group workouts if we could each do different workouts, since we’re often at different places in our training plans, so this is just a bump and suggestion to add that functionality.
