Good workout. RHR this morning was 55-57, was around 60 2months ago, so I am making progress. For the next month or two, I am going to focus on longer, but less taxing rides, in hopes of burning more tot calories. Now that my body is active again, I should be able to drop 2lbs a week over the next two months, which I think will improve my riding more than pushing harder. Target 180-185.

Can really feel the stomps add muscle tiredness to an otherwise easy workout. Decided to keep workout short so I can ride tomorrow. My cardio system is far ahead of my legs -- my legs will give out long before my lungs start to feel any real effort. Hopefully my legs will catch up.

I like doing the same workout I did a few weeks ago and seeing how my heart rate is lower for the same ammount or more work. I'm improving steadily (or my trainer is loosening..)

NOTES
In one month of training (and one full recovery week), I increased FTP from 191 to 207. I am in my early 40s and am new to riding. Over the past 20 years since college I have been largely sedentary, but have kept a gym membership during much of that time, alernately weight lifting and doing light cardio (running, climbing, and swimming). I have not competed in any organized sports. Three years ago, I ramped up my running to an easy, unstructured (slow 8:30) 30+ miles/wk, to lose 25 lbs and get back to my early college weight (175). I lost a lot of muscle mass through calorie restriction, but in the process, got my rhr to 58. Unfortunately, the constant jarring caused a serious flare up of a recurring back injury. After being laid up for 2 months, unable to walk, I decided my running days were over and I needed a new cardio pursuit to maintain my fitness. Fortunately, I still have my knees. The first month of training was largely throttled by sore legs (and a sore butt!) I wanted to work harder, but after overtraining a couple times I was mindful of recovery. The majority of the workouts were sweet spot. I am hoping to see similar improvements in my second month of training, because I anticipate being able to train harder, now that my body is acclimated to the bike. This 8-minute test was well paced, although I feel I could have pushed my heart rate to 190 with a bit more pain management that will come with further training. I worked as hard as I could, but I feel I was limited by lack of will power; my body was ready to give a bit more. This (rambling) note is for the benefit of any one wondering how much improvement can be made by a relatively sedentary 40something, in his first month of training, doing primarily sweet spot rides. FTP +16. Thanks Trainer Road! Workout notes: I dont know why my heart rate didnt drop to 125-130 between intervals, it was higher than expected.
